Within the framework of my piano lessons I have started to write small compositions from the field of jazz and blues for my students.
The idea was to compose simple themes combined with jazz harmony.
This is how these "12 Mini Boogies" came about.
The themes in the right hand consist of typical phrases and reproduce the melody of a classic jazz standard well. The ternary phrasing should definitely be observed here.
In the left hand, there are mostly typical boogie accompaniments that switch back and forth between pitches. Fingerings for each piece make playing easier and thus ensure good rhythm.
In the appendix you will find the compositions in the jazz-typical lead sheet notation, as it is common e.g. in the Real Books. Here, only the melody of the song (for the right hand) is notated and the harmonies are presented in the form of chord symbols. To get you started, I have notated a sample voicing for the left hand in each case.
Advanced pianists can work out the accompaniment themselves on the basis of the harmonies or play it freely. In addition, the harmonic song form can be used as a basis for free improvisation, as is common when playing standards in jazz. A first notated example of such an improvisation can be found on the following page of the leadsheets.
